CarHistory makes checking a used car simple. You start with a free VIN check, see what history records exist, and unlock the full report only when you're ready. Behind the scenes, we pull insurance, salvage, title, auction, service, and motor-vehicle records from multiple national databases and combine them into one clear, de-duplicated report.
The goal is to give you everything you need to buy or sell with confidence, without paying for a report before you know there's something in it. Here's exactly how each step works.
Step 1: Enter your VIN and check for free
Every car has a unique 17-character VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). You'll find it on the lower corner of the windshield on the driver's side, on the door jamb sticker, or on the title and registration.
Type or paste the VIN into the free check. In seconds, you'll see the basics confirmed for that vehicle, with no payment and no account hoops to jump through first. This is the fastest way to make sure you're looking at the right car before you go any further.
Step 2: See which records exist (preview)
After the free check, you get a preview that shows how much history is available for that VIN. We tell you whether records exist across our national databases so you know whether a full report is worth unlocking.
This preview is the honest middle step. Instead of guessing, you can see at a glance whether a vehicle has a rich paper trail or very little on file, and decide from there.
Step 3: Unlock the full report with a credit
When you're ready, use one credit to unlock the complete report. This is where CarHistory stands apart: we combine the records from multiple national databases into a single, de-duplicated report so you read one clear story instead of cross-checking several separate documents.
The full report brings the vehicle's history together in one place, so you can spot red flags and confirm the good signs without flipping between tabs.
Many databases, combined into one report
Most history reports show you a single source's view of a vehicle. CarHistory combines records from multiple national databases and removes the duplicates, so the same accident or title event isn't listed twice.
That matters because no single database holds everything. One may have a record the others missed. By combining them, you get a fuller picture in a single report that's faster to read and easier to trust.
No data found? Your credit is refunded automatically
Sometimes a VIN simply has no history on file. If we can't find data for the vehicle you unlocked, we automatically refund the credit. You are never charged for an empty report.
That's the whole idea behind starting with a free check and a preview: you only spend a credit when there's a real report to read, and you're protected if there isn't.
